{"id":6,"date":"2018-12-15T20:57:08","date_gmt":"2018-12-15T09:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/foxtales.fr\/?p=6"},"modified":"2019-02-01T23:51:20","modified_gmt":"2019-02-01T12:51:20","slug":"why-and-how-i-learned-japanese","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/foxtales.fr\/?p=6","title":{"rendered":"Why and How I learned Japanese"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here you are, looking at your first Japanese lesson full of weird characters and designs just unreadable, and you\u2019re like <br>\u201cWhat the hell am I doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yep, that\u2019s a language from another world (actually Japan is just like another far away galaxy). <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And at first, there\u2019s so much to learn, comprehend, a whole new logic to understand, that you can quickly get out of despair.<br><br>So, let\u2019s go back to the question. If it\u2019s so complicated why would I ever learn this language?<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>During my stay in Japan, people asked me this many times and were very curious to know what made me feel like learning Japanese.<br><em>&#8220;Do you like manga or anime??&#8221;<\/em> was the first logical thing they could think of. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because yes, that\u2019s maybe the main important cultural aspect imported from Japan in many countries: animation. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Just after sushis. <br><br>In my case, I wasn\u2019t so into animation or mangas, and the real cause which got me into Japanese is: <strong>Hasard<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/foxtales.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_4111-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Osaka dotonbori street neon lights\" class=\"wp-image-571\" srcset=\"http:\/\/foxtales.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_4111.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/foxtales.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_4111-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/foxtales.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_4111-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was at university and had to learn something. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always liked foreign languages and wanted to learn something really different, that would open my view. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My heart was hesitating between Chinese and Japanese. Many people suggested me to learn Chinese that is the most spoken language in the world, and would get me more business opportunities. So, I gave it a go. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it was a total failure&#8230; I tried hard but really didn\u2019t come to like learning it. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I gave up after 3 months.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>The next year, I enrolled for a new degree and tried learning Japanese.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I might say I fell in love with it: <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more I learned about the more interesting it was, and the more I wanted to know about it! I loved the sound, the stories behind the kanjis, the culture.<br>At that time, I started to immerse myself a lot in the culture by watching an insane amount of documentaries, reading some mangas, or watching dramas, etc. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the most fascinating thing was for me <strong>the whole new logic and thinking<\/strong> when it comes to speak Japanese.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>I\u2019m a native french speaker and just like in english, we use a common subject-verb-nominal structure. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in Japanese the verb comes at the end, so you just happen to think in a different way. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, as for any language, many words and expressions are proper to the dialect and don\u2019t exist in other languages.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning them is like learning new thinkings and emotions. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OK, I won\u2019t get deeply in the subject that would be a theme for another philosophical article I think, but that part is truly interesting!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as you get really interested in a subject, your ability to learn it, to make effort for it become naturally strong. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet of course that\u2019s not everything.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>I might have been a very lazy student, but, after my two years of Japanese course at university, I was barely able to make a full sentence. I could only make some greetings and pop up some words here and there. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did I really learned it?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, not at university!<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was a good start to immerse me properly in the base and receive a support \/ guideline to follow from the teachers. But honestly, the scholar method my university used was very time-loosing and inefficient in my opinion. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were there trying to translate some newspaper articles, learning those mega complicated kanjis, when we couldn\u2019t properly make a basic daily conversation in Japanese.<br><br>I guess you hear this a lot when it comes to learn a language, but the key is to meet native speakers of the language you learn. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To listen to them, to talk with them (it\u2019s ok if you speak like a drunken Teletubbies, the important is to try speaking).<br>I went to live in Japan with a working holiday VISA being only able to make some worth 4-5 words sentences&#8230; <\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I finally got to really speak it after 6 months.<br>During these 6 months, I met Japanese people everyday, I talked with them everyday. I took note of every word I didn\u2019t know, I searched for it when I got back home, I simply tried to remember slowly the words useful to me.
